Cuba on Paper introduces Cleveland to
the collaborative spirit of Cuban printmaking by Cuba's premiere
master artists. The art of printmaking in Cuba has a long
and venerable tradition dating back to the 17th century, when
tobacco growers imported lithographic stones to produce cigar
labels. Its character has always had a unique flavor with
its touch of magic
realism and symbolism.
For the past two decades, Cuban art has been
an important force in the arena of international contemporary
art. The La Habana Biennials are renowned for consistently
showcasing fresh, exciting, and provocative art from Cuba
as well as other developing nations.
An important milestone in Cuban art was the
seminal 1981, La Habana show known as Volumen 1, which artists
and art critics have cited as the first public exhibition
that sought to move beyond the cliché of socialist
realist painting and political propaganda. Likewise, the first
La Habana Biennial in 1984 was instrumental in attracting
foreign curators and critics to Cuba. Within this environment,
artists captured international attention with their cleverly
ambiguous treatment of such themes as identity and migration,
and their innovative use of materials.
The pieces showcased in this exhibition are
by premiere artists who have earned international acclaim
and have regular exhibitions in leading museums and galleries
around the globe.
