ABOUT THE ARTIST
Diana Miller-Pierce is a traditional watercolorist in the impressionistic style. While her work is painted in a traditional impressionistic style, Ms. Miller-Pierce involves a strong sense of abstraction in the underlying composition of the paintings. The artist is attracted to scenes involving strong clear light that casts shadows on her subject matter. She looks for a composition of dark and light patterns that help to create the dynamic tension and energy. Last but not least, she uses color to enhance the images and enchant the viewer. She specializes in floral, architectural, mechanical, cats and still life subjects, which have been influenced by her travels in the Caribbean and Southwestern United States.

Lucy Arnold

Paradise (Watercolor)
ARTIST STATEMENT Bits of flight (Watercolor)
My inspiration comes from Nature, both external and internal. Little bits of natural debris find their way into my pockets when I'm walking in the woods or on the beach. Marin County is wonderful for being outdoors, of course. I end up with feathers, stones, shells, bones, seeds, leaves. These may sit on my desk for months. Eventually, a few special items will seem meant to go together. They take on a far greater significance when placed just so in perfect relationship to one another, ready to be models for a painting.

PEONIES SMILE.

Sugar Magnolia trails
the saddle backed
yellow Provencal chair,
surrounded by violet,
yellow, purple - gold.

Peonies

sniffed, pawed, delicately ingested
by Scamp and Sheba, caught as one
from their afternoon post siesta
making it gainfully through
yet another long hot sultry summer day
all caught
within your wide angled
summers here at last

smile.

EARTH HEART

From the sea to the shore, from the settlements to the stars,
the dream is always the same, put a smile on the void

smile is

- space migration - intelligence - life extension -

EARTH HEAT.

CALL OF THE ALMOST WILD.

Gliding, seemingly walking
on the very face of the waters;
gentle, yet cautious;
long neck stretched achingly forwards
bright beady gimlet eyes searching beneath
the muddied opaque surface,
subtly detecting, suddenly striking,
swiftly in, and not so softly, down,
rising triumphant, long beak fresh bloodied by protein
as the great grey speckled bird, mildly turns,
lifting ever so slowly from the midge strewn surface
long wings rhythmically beating
through the shimmering early summer evening.

ART at WAR THE ARTIST'S VOICE

The Aldo Castillo Gallery will present an exhibition to provide a forum for all artists (established and emerging) to express their views on the current acts of war and war in general.

The Gallery's social mission is to increase awareness of the significant cultural contributions of international artists and Latin American artists in particular, through exhibitions, educational programs and live performances. Any "theatre" of war is so inconsistent with our overall mission that we feel compelled to encourage artists to express their individual perspectives as a means to further dialogue and present the multitude of opinions that surround this subject (it seems ironic that the current Iraq war is taking place in Mesopotamia, where one of the world's first civilizations and important cultures was located).

DEADLINE FOR EXHIBITION ENTRY: July 14th , 2004
