ARTIST STATEMENT

I find the visual and emotional qualities of bodies filled with nothing but air an interesting subject, reflecting the transient qualities of our real flesh and blood bodies. In all my work, whether depicting inflatable dolls, scraps of paper, “real” people or more traditional still life elements, I am drawn to the issues of dual meaning. The balance of innocence and worldliness, fear and humor, permanence and the temporary.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Working with the nude, I take a layered approach. First and foremost it is a monument to the non-hero. No uniforms or medals, no pearls or fancy dress – just life.
On another level it is about relationships. The relationship of artist to model, the model to the box of the canvas, and life to life.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Over the past year, I have been committed to creating a series of surreal paintings depicting my life's love affairs. The scope of this work encompasses sixth-grade crushes, a teen marriage, and the reclaiming of sexual freedom while in my thirties. Initially, I wanted to use these pieces as pegs upon which to hang memories, an autobiography in paint. However, as the works progressed, I came to realize that there were far more implications involved than simply my own narrative.

Questions began to arise. I began to wonder how I really saw men, and if other women felt the same. I began to question what attraction and intimacy meant in this strange new world of pre-nuptual agreements and cyber-sex. Aside from my own personal experiences, this project has grown to an exploration of power in our society and how it is associated with gender. Reflecting back on the relationships in my past, I have been able to understand more fully the complexities and dynamics of what we called love. It goes beyond roses and ballads, to the irrevocable fact that our relationships shape who we are, and the roads we take."

This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I’ve tried hard to put together a gallery that won't scare people away. I was very careful not to cross the border into porno, but more so into fashion, so I think you will enjoy these artistic works on expressions of the body. I have discovered so many artists putting this gallery together I could not exhibit them all, so I chose the expressive nude work for you all to discover. In the months ahead in 2005, I will put together a gallery on Fashion.
