Cultural Mutilations in Pursuit of Beauty

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The extent to which mankind has pursued physical beauty throughout history, regardless of the pain, dangers and sacrifices endured through self disfigurement is seen in Tobey's mural, entitled Cultural Mutilations in Pursuit of Beauty. This mural was completed by Tobey in 1966, and installed in the Smithsonian's Hall of Physical Anthropology opposite his Trephinations mural.

In February 2004, The Art Fix project started with 250 art-related contacts in my personal list. Today, The Art Fix campaigns reach a targeted art-related audience of around 15,000 weekly. By the end of 2005, The Art Fix's network is expected to reach 20,000-25,000 art-related contacts. To date, around 700 artists and galleries have been promoted in The Art Fix campaigns. The Art Fix project filled a promotional void and need of a large art-related audience with a professional look, credibility and an honest message "Promoting art for the sake of sanity, happiness and art itself." However, the more we grow, the more expensive and time consuming it gets to sustain this free venue.

If you like THE ART FIX, please help support it!
You can now make secure online donations with your credit card through PayPal.
Gifts of all sizes will provide valuable much-needed support for this project. THANKS!

Urban Totem #511

...Driven by instinct, and informed by a highly developed minimalist aesthetic sense of balance and proportion, Glinka’s work is simplicity itself. But simplicity is never simple. Even his materials carry emotional weight: barbed wire, ash, pearls. Werner has always found inspiration at the intersection of man and nature, and the interaction and juxtaposition of the two. But while Urban Totems show his roots in this regard, this new work is more about his branching out into rich new territory beyond pure aesthetics, into the emotional shorthand of symbolism and the power we invest in it.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The world is filled with structures, some forgotten and others well-loved. What stories do these buildings have to tell, what scenes have these stones witnessed? Why is the human race so obsessed with erecting monuments in metal and brick and why do they so
carelessly abandon them when they are done?
